Sara Bor & Angela Harrison, 25th January – 8th February, 2025
Painter and Visual Fine Artist.
Sara Bor: “The project went well. We worked both collaboratively and individually towards a planned joint exhibition based on our experiences of walking in the landscape of West Penwith. We kept an audio diary of the residency which we are editing together with images, into a PowerPoint.
We produced 2 collaborative artworks (140 x140 cm) based on our responses, one produced at the start of our stay and one at the end, the outcomes were interesting and illustrated how much the environment had influenced our ideas.
Neither of us were used to sharing a workspace, this took some adjustment. It was interesting to see how the working methods of each artist influenced the other. It’s important to respect the different expectations of each artist. It was an extremely rewarding experience sharing ideas, working together, visiting galleries, and sharing our thoughts on joint walks. I have returned invigorated, and the experience is also feeding into my PhD research.”
Angela Harrison: “I thoroughly enjoyed being able to immerse myself in my artistic practice without any domestic distractions. The opportunity to share the space with another artist I found really valuable. Sara and I had previously worked on a walking project during lockdown where we explored our different environments sharing the same directions for a walk and recording our observations and feelings through sketches, words, photographs and video calls. This opportunity allowed us to walk together in the same space. We were able to experience the landscape of West Penwith and shared our observations and sensations. It was interesting to note what previous knowledge and experiences we bought to this. We produced two collaborative large-scale drawings from our imagination working intuitively. Each of us responding to the marks that the other had made. For both of us it was a new way of working and took us out of our comfort zone. It was interesting to watch each other develop paintings from sketches and drawings as we used different techniques and approaches. We kept an audio diary which encouraged us to evaluate each day’s outcomes. The residency made me re evaluate my practice and approach to painting. I feel that I am working in a more expressive and intuitive way as I became totally emersed into the landscape so much so that it filled my dreams as well as my waking day. I have started three canvases and have sketches for another five.”
