Being in such a stunning location my dilemma every day was how much time to be in the studio working and how much time to be out exploring! I spent a lot of time gazing out of the window at the sea, watching the tide coming in and out, and also quite a lot of time pottering around the rockpools in Priest’s Cove photographing the extraordinary range of seaweeds revealed when the tide was out.
Initially I wanted to create work about the sea so started experimenting with markmaking to try and evoke the power of the surrounding ocean. However the more I explored the more I began to think I might focus on the seaweeds, as I find them so fascinating and because they are so vital environmentally, but also being depleted due to climate change, over harvesting etc. I created a series of experimental samples using similar markmaking techniques and feel these have potential for further development.
I think I hoped to achieve more, but a week is a short time, and ideas develop and change. The residency gave me time to start the creative process without the distractions of everyday life, and kickstart new ideas. Above all it was a privilege to spend time in such an awe inspiring place and I am so grateful for the opportunity.
