Ruth McDonald & Jill Pantony 7 – 14 January 2017

Ruth:

I concentrated on completing a full concertina sketchbook recording each day and the weather conditions round Cape Cornwall. I also started 2 graphite & gesso panels and 2 paintings. Although I always intended to produce a printed book I felt it was important not to have pre-conceived ideas and working on my concertina sketchbook allowed me to react to the changing conditions on an hourly basis. The isolation of Cape Cornwall in Winter and lack of any distractions proved to be invaluable as I was able to focus and think clearly.

I will be exhibiting the work resulting from the Brisons Residency at the following venues during 2017:-

  • 6 works in a 2 week exhibition with United Society of artists in The Pie Factory and Lombard Street Gallery Margate in 15-28th June 2017
  • 4 works in exhibition 3-9th July In the Mall Galleries London with Society of Women Artists
  • A solo exhibition in The Horsebridge Whitstable 30th Aug- 5th September Title : “Shoreline”
  • 4 works in a show with UA in the Mernier Gallery London 4th-9th September
  • An exhibition in the Horsebridge Whitstable with the Earthbound Women 11th -17th October

Jill:

It was challenging working outside as weather was very wet and windy, I needed to switch what I was doing to suit the day. In order to draw the landscape I had to sit in the car. You need to be flexible

I identified areas of interest to be the fishing boats and fishermen’s huts, which were both unexpected but fit with my interest of recording landscape where the human trace is found.

I have started writing Haikus from my experiences of the elements and the landscape. I would like to make these into a book with an image to accompany each text. I aimed to record the essence of the landscape which is distilled into Haiku and pared down images

I will exhibit 4 pieces in an exhibition in March as part of the POW (Power of Women) festival, in Broadstairs

I will exhibit more pieces in an exhibition with Earthbound Women in October at Horsebridge Centre, Whitstable
