Rachel Brown, 25 May – 1st June 2019

Having been very unwell for the last 2 years (much of which bed/house bound) this was a huge undertaking and such a joy to be able to achieve. Without putting pressure on myself, I still, with careful management of my illness, managed sketches and started a few paintings. I felt very alive and enthused, and this was exactly what I hoped this residency would allow.
Expected outcomes were really to reignite my desire to paint, photograph and create: having done that this week, I felt a huge sense of achievement.

It gave me hope that I can still manage to paint with the limited energy I have – in small amounts when I feel well enough – that’s a very uplifting thing. Exhibitions and sales are a thing of the future when my health improves enough. Art and creativity and being by the sea is a powerfully healing.
