Annie Musgrove, 2 – 16 December 2023

I spent the first 10 days walking the coast in the mornings, sketching and noting the light changes and the effects on the water. The afternoons and evenings were spent painting in oils and I was keen to develop a looser more instinctive style to capture the atmosphere of the sea and sky. I made over 30 pieces of work altogether. The seclusion of Brisons Veor allowed me to refine my palette and develop my work in a way which would not have happened at home with contestant interruption. I was pleased that through the work I became more confident in my approach and was able to work more fluidly.

The last few days were spent painting in acrylics, to allow the oils a chance to dry. I had an online course from St Ives on abstracting the landscape by Liz Hough which I wanted to work through. I had hoped to feel more instinctive in painting more abstract landscapes but found them incredibly challenging with so many decisions to make. It was a great opportunity to work out of my comfort zone but I still need to reflect on which direction I move on in.

The body of work based on the sea which I created in oils will be exhibited at Salcombe Art Club from May to September in 2024. The more abstract work may be shown at Ilminster Art Centre in September 2024 as part of a solo exhibition I have there.

In addition, I will be taking the lessons I learned in making the oil paintings back to the oil painting workshops that I am running in Bampton, Ilminster, Salcombe and the Blackdowns in spring and summer 2024.
