Mike Thorpe & Terry Gibson, 8 – 15 April 2023
“The residency at Brisons Veor, Cape Cornwall has given me the opportunity, time and space to create work inspired by West Cornwall, particularly the tidal and social margins that stretch along the coastline. Traces of human interaction etched into the landscape defines this place.
Despite (or maybe because of…) initial setbacks of injury, illness, car failure and the hurricane strength Storm Noa, the residency has provided a unique opportunity to discover new techniques and media.
New works of collage have emerged, portraying a changing landscape, exploring the marks of human impact in the peripheral margins. The layered nature of collage reflects the strata laid down in time.
Importantly, I have collaborated with Terry Gibson, while he composed soundscapes through electronic and found sound. In response to his tracks, I have been learning the processes of producing segments of video, using footage, photography and art works.”
“The project reacted to quite an unusual situation as the cottage and surrounding area were engulfed in Storm Neo which strongly affected the creative response and collaboration. One lesson learnt was that collaboration evolves slowly and we can already see scope for deeper collaborations. Another was that the duration of just one week focused us on a particular output. The presentation of the four part sequence on the website is a specific outcome and we had a virtual ‘launch’ of the site on the final evening of our residency, which resulted in a much stronger response than if the work had been posted without that specific moment”
