Lydia Needle

6 – 13 February 2016

The project went amazingly well but in two very different directions.  Firstly, I thought I’d be continuing with my needlefelt ‘container pieces’, which are 3D animals worked into vintage tins and boxes.  However, before Christmas I’d be using the opportunity to advance my wet felting practice in order to produce flat, frameable work, scenes of Cornwall.  One of the reason for this was to make work that was more likely to sell, to go on peoples’s  walls – it was a marketing idea, if you will

Within a day, I knew that I was deluding myself – I’m not a scenic artist, simple.  That freed me up to make more experimental, expressive works directly in response to what I was looking out upon: the sea, the sky, the storm.  And I have to tell you, it was wonderful, liberating – it’s what I’ve been looking for for a long time in my work.
